Community Development (Community Services & Development)
About Youturn
StandBy is a program of Youturn.
The individuals, families and communities we support are at the heart of everything we do at Youturn. We listen deeply – honouring every voice, story, culture and choice – through our core values of Integrity, Respect and Inclusion. We have a strong commitment to reflection and responsibility and are always curious and adapting through our Learning value. At Youturn, we believe in the importance of caring today for a better tomorrow, represented in our value of Stewardship.
Youturn is a community-based not-for-profit charity providing social, community, and health services across Australia. With more than 35 years of experience, we are a trusted provider supporting individuals and communities through life’s toughest moments, empowering people of all ages to live safe, connected, and meaningful lives. With compassion and equity at our core, we support people in the areas of housing, community and family support, mental health, and support for those bereaved or impacted by suicide.
Change lives. Walk alongside communities. Go where support is needed most.
This is not a metropolitan desk‑based role — and that’s exactly what makes it special.
StandBy Support After Suicide is seeking a passionate Outreach Worker to join our Northern Territory team, supporting individuals, families and communities impacted by suicide. This role is for someone who values connection over comfort, purpose over predictability, and understands the power of being present when people need it most.
You’ll work across urban, regional and remote NT communities — sometimes by road, sometimes by small plane — delivering trauma‑informed, compassionate support and helping communities strengthen their capacity to heal and support one another.
About the role
As a StandBy Outreach Worker, you will support the local delivery of the nationally recognised StandBy program, ensuring people bereaved or impacted by suicide receive timely, respectful and culturally responsive care.
Working closely with the StandBy Coordinator, you will:
• Provide face‑to‑face and telephone support to individuals and families bereaved by suicide
• Lead and coordinate support sessions, including home visits and outreach services
• Respond to notifications and incoming support requests
• Assess needs through risk screening, initial engagement and ongoing support planning
• Maintain accurate records and case notes within the StandBy database
• Travel across the Northern Territory as required (including small aircraft travel)
• Support community engagement, education and training using asset‑based community development principles
• Work collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, local services and stakeholders
• Champion the voice and value of lived experience
• Contribute feedback, insights and continuous improvement to strengthen service delivery
• Maintain contemporary knowledge of suicide postvention, grief, trauma and best practice care
• Ensure service delivery aligns with organisational, contractual and legislative requirements

• Experience supporting people impacted by suicide, grief, loss or trauma
• Strong engagement and relationship‑building skills across diverse communities
• Confidence working independently across geographically spread regions
• Exceptional communication, documentation and self‑care practice
• A willingness and comfort travelling regularly — including in small planes
• Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) — or willingness to obtain (supported upon commencement)
Why join StandBy?
• Work in a mission‑led, values‑driven organisation
• Play a tangible role in supporting healing after suicide
